Bogotá

The capital of Colombia is located in the Center of the country, on the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. It has an approximate length of 33 kilometers from south to north and 16 kilometers from east to west. Thanks to its location on the northwestern area of ​​the Andes Mountains, it has a wide variety of soils, types of waters and other natural formations. Bogotá is located at 2600 meters (8600 ft) high above the Sea level and is inhabited by approximately 8 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area. The capital maintains an average temperature of 14o C (58o F) throughout the year.

 

It is a city that offers a great diversity of activities and attractions with many museums, monuments, restaurants, cafes, theaters and shopping centers fulfilling cultural, recreational and gastronomic expectatives of its visitors.

 

Additionally, near Bogota there are numerous sites of interest such as the Chingaza National Park , Guatavita Lagoon, Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, Sanctuary of Monserrate, Villa de Leyva and many more. Near Bogota, it is also possible to practice sports Such as rock climbing, kayaking, rafting and paragliding.

 

The name Bogota has its origin in the indigenous word "Bacatá", name of the capital of the confederation of the Zipa in the old Muisca civilization, which means according to the spanish chronicler Juan de Castellanos, "the end of the fields"

 

Gastronomy

In Bogota it is possible to find restaurants of typical, international and specialized food in different places of the city. The main sectors of restaurants are Usaquén, Zona G, La Candelaria, Zona T, and Parque de la 93 among others.

 

Among the typical Bogota dishes you can highlight the Ajiaco Santafereño, a soup based on chicken and three different types of potatoes that are obtained in the region, cob (corn) and guascas (typical herb in Colombian cuisine). At the time of serving you will add cream , capers and is accompanied by avocado.

 

It is also traditional to consume tamales with chocolate. Throughout the country there are different varieties of Tamal, however all have as a common element the green leaves of banana in which they are wrapped and give their characteristic flavor. The tamales of the capital are composed of a mass of corn, chicken and / or Pork rib, peas, carrot and chickpeas.

 

As for desserts and typical sweets, the city offers a variety that includes breva with arequipe (caramel), strawberries with cream, cream dessert, wafers and curd with melao among others. For cold evenings there is the canelazo, a hot drink that is prepared based on panela, Brandy and cinnamon.

 

In bakery there is the traditional soft milk-based bread, and other preparations such as pandeyuca, pandebono and almojábana, corn flour rolls or cassava starch, which are consumed with curds or with cheese, in the mornings as part of the breakfast or in the evenings at the time of a snack.

 

And of course no one can leave Bogota without trying the omnipresent "tinto" (Black coffee) or The infinite drinks prepared with our 100% Colombian coffee.

 

Other typical dishes of the city and its region are the bread soup in casserole, changua, mazamorra and the bogotan puchero.

 

 

Tourism

Bogotá is the main destination for foreigners visiting Colombia, above Cartagena, city that for many years was the most visited of the country. this is due not only to the tourist theme but also to the large foreign inversions that Colombia is receiving.

 

The important tourist places of the city are the Botanical Garden José Celestino Mutis, The Quinta de Bolívar, the National Observatory, the Bogota Planetarium, Maloka, the National Museum, The Gold Museum, Bolivar Square, Monserrate Hill, The National Park, Simon Bolivar Park, El Mirador de La Calera and La Candelaria, a town that is a heritage site and a Property of Cultural Interest National character.

 

In Bogotá there is a varied offer of accommodation that ranges from posadas for backpackers to five stars hotels. The offer of hotels in the historic center of La Candelaria and its surrounding areas, is aimed at a public that loves culture and arts. Hotels located to the north of the city, are focused on business tourism, shopping or pleasure.

 

In areas near Bogotá we find destinations such as the Fúquene Lagoon and the Neusa Reservoirs, Tominé and Sisga, with camping zones and water sports. As well, it is possible to camp in the Natural National Park Sumapaz (between the Capital District and the Department of Meta), or to the east of Bogotá in the Chingaza Natural Park

The city has the Touristic Train of the Savannah that runs tours on weekends and holidays from the center of the city to Jaime Duque Park, Zipaquirá and sometimes Nemocón. In Zipaquirá there is the Salt Cathedral(Historical Heritage and National Monument), built inside the salt mines of Zipaquirá. It is a tourist site, more like a museum than a true Temple. Inside is a rich artistic collection of salt and marble sculptures in an atmosphere full of a deep religious sense that is atractive for tourists. The importance of the Cathedral lies in its value as a cultural, religious and environmental heritage.

 

In the same area is Guatavita, where it is presumed on the legend of El Dorado.

 

Night life

Bogotá is a modern city with a vibrant and sophisticated nightlife.
